The healthcare system around the world is comprised of doctors, healthcare workers, caretakers, and nurses alike. However, a lot often we forget to acknowledge their contribution to the healthcare world. To eradicate this difference, International Nurses Day is being celebrated all around the globe on 12th May every year. Undoubtedly, nurses play a significant role in fostering the healthcare system by working towards the safety and fast recovery of the patients.
From having the vast knowledge of various medical and non-medical procedures to saving a number of lives, nurses work tremendously hard in tough environments to provide their patients with the best care possible.
First observed in 1953, International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12th May every year which is also the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. It all started when an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare named Dorothy Sutherland asked the then President Dwight D. Eisenhower to announce a “Nurses Day” in order to acknowledge the efforts of the entire nursing fraternity. At first, President Eisenhower rejected the proposal but later on The International Council of Nurses celebrated the day on May 12th, 1965.
It was January 1974 when the day was made official and came to be known as International Nurses Day. Since that day, each year The International Council of Nurses celebrates this day worldwide and provides nurses with the International Nurses’ Day Kit which includes educational materials along with public information materials to empower them with knowledge.
