World Environment Day 2019: Contribute Your Bit

June 5th is observed as World Environment Day at a global level. A day decided by the United Nations, one cannot stress enough on its importance. The critical condition of our ecosystem has increased the need for awareness and participation from every individual on this planet. Since its inception in 1974, the event has garnered publicity at a massive level and is celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide. The celebrations allow us to further broaden the basis of the widespread knowledge of individuals, businesses, societies, and governments in terms of preserving our environment.

The theme for this year’s Environment Day 2019 focuses on air pollution. Approximately 7 million people die prematurely every year due to air pollution. About 4 million of these take place within the Asia-Pacific region. This day is going to urge governments, industries, communities, and individuals to move towards renewable energy sources to enhance air quality and encourage green technology. Greenhouse gases have reached a dangerous level with severe effects in the Polar Regions. The rise in temperature in these areas has resulted in severe melting of snow. The adverse effects of our actions have compelled us to now take specific measures to ensure we don’t encourage pollution and help the environment regain its natural state.

There are certain things that you can do to make efforts in the right direction.

  1. Minimize Pollution from Cars

These are one of the biggest emitters of nitrogen oxide which severely affect lung development and overall life expectancy. This has become a serious issue in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Calcutta, etc. You should avoid leaving your vehicle on when not in use, combine your trips, use public transport wherever possible, avoid rush hours, and definitely stay away from diesel cars.

  • Recycle and Reuse

Recycle and reuse – it is the most convenient solution to our problem nowadays. Apply this simple rule in everyday activities and you’ll make a great contribution to saving our environment. Be it your kitchen, bathroom, garage, or lawn, every space can help control degradation. By using disposable ziplock bags which can be easily reused and recycled, you can take a step further.

You can also convert waste from your kitchen like biodegradable material into compost and manure and contribute your bit towards safeguarding the environment.

By following the aforementioned methods, you can help curb pollution at individual levels which, in turn, will definitely make a larger impact on the environment as a whole.

In the hope of leaving a more sustainable and healthy ecosystem for the future generations, get together on 5th June and ensure you plant a tree and resolve to work in prolonging the beauty and sanctity of the wonderful world we live in!
