Fungal Infections in the COVID Pandemic

Lately, India had witness a sudden rise in the cases of black fungus followed by white fungus then the deadliest of all yellow fungus. While people were trying to cope with the damages and reckoning caused by COVID 19 virus, some of them were attacked by these fungal infections.

1. Black Fungus

Mucormycosis or black fungus disease is caused by mucoromycetes, the group of fungi is present throughout the environment.

Symptoms: Include One-sided facial swelling, black lesions on the nasal bridge and upper mouth, black discharge from the nose,  nasal congestion, headache, fever. People with uncontrolled blood sugar and use of  steroid without medical supervision increase the risk of getting infected.

Treatment: Black fungus can be treated through surgery, antifungal medicines.

Precautions: Avoid all steroids without medical supervision, keep blood sugar level in control.

 

2. White Fungus

Candidiasis or white fungus widely found in contaminated surfaces in hospitals can affect blood, heart, brain, and bones.

Symptoms: Include reduced oxygen, fever, cough, diarrhoea, cotton-like feeling in the mouth, white patches on the skin, soreness or redness, and trouble swallowing.

Treatment: White fungus can be treated through antifungal medication given either intravenously or orally. 

Precautions: Maintain personal and surrounding hygiene.

 

3. Yellow Fungus

Yellow fungus infection begins internally, making it deadlier than black or white fungus. By the time, symptoms are visible the infection is widely spread in the body.

Symptoms: Include loss of appetite, lethargy, nausea, organ failure, delayed wound healing.

Treatment: Yellow fungus can be treat through  Amphoteracin-B injection , anti fungal medication.

Precautions: Keep yourself, and surroundings hygienic, maintain humidity in the room to avoid bacterial growth.

 

People with diabetes are at risk of developing black fungus, due to COVID 19. It attacks when the immune system is compromised. The other two fungal infections can attack anyone recovering from COVID- 19 hence , it is important to take the vaccine, stay indoors and consume a nutritious diet to strengthen the immune system. A healthy immune system will keep unwelcome viruses and infections at bay. Stay home and stay healthy.
